Soil Association certified organic, single origin green tea leaves. Grown at 1,150ft, nestled where the plains of West Bengal meet the foothills of the Himalayas, Putharjhora is the only certified organic and biodynamic tea garden in the entire Dooars region — a distinction it has held since 1997.
The garden takes its name from the rocky mountain streams that flank it on either side: 'Puthar' meaning rock, 'Jhora' meaning stream. Fed by natural spring waters and rich organic soil, the tea is grown under a three-tiered canopy of shade trees and leguminous plants, with no pesticides — only natural predator insects to keep the ecosystem in balance.
The cultivar is the Assam variety of Camellia sinensis, including the CP-1 clone unique to Putharjhora, producing a brisk, smooth green tea with the body and character you'd expect from a great Assam — without the astringency.
The garden is also home to a migratory herd of around 100 elephants, traversing between the Bhutan hills and the forests of Nepal. Putharjhora holds the first Elephant Friendly certification in the Dooars region, awarded in 2020 in partnership with the Wildlife Friendly Enterprise Network.
