The silver birch is a medium-sized deciduous tree with white, papery bark that peels in flakes. Native to Europe and Asia, reaching as far as Siberia and northern Iran — in southern Europe only found at higher altitudes. A hardy pioneer, it's one of the first trees to appear on bare or fire-swept land.
